Open Channel flow meters measure level, flow rate and total volume of water flowing through weirs, flumes, channels and partially filled pipes. The flow meters use a non-contact level sensor to detect the water level and then calculate the flow rate and volume using the Manning equation and characteristics of the channel.
Open channel flow monitoring is a method of determining liquid volumetric flow rates in applications that rely on moving liquids through open conduits rather than enclosed full pipes. Examples of these types of applications include wastewater processing effluent flows, managing water usage in agricultural irrigation channels, and monitoring flows through storm water systems. Traditionally, this type of measurement has been performed via the use of flumes or weirs in conjunction with a liquid level ultrasonic sensor. In recent years, global environmental concerns and increased scarcity of freshwater resources has necessitated more accurate, reliable and cost effective methods of Open Channel Flow Measurement. Two such improved methods offered by SmartMeasurement include the advanced transit time ultrasonic Area-Velocity measurement technique and the low-cost Doppler flow meter ultrasonic technology.

A Steam flow meter primarily consists of a bluff body, a sensor assembly and a transmitter. A bluff body or a shedder is nothing but a non-streamlined object or a barrier placed perpendicular to the axis of the pipeline, around which the medium flows. The frequency of the vortices, i.e. the number of vortices shed per second, is directly proportional to the velocity of the medium. This vortex shedding frequency is used to calculate the mass flow. The sensor assembly records the pressure and velocity oscillations generated on each side of the bluff body by the vortices and generates a digital linear output signal

Electromagnetic flow meters (or mag meters) are a type of velocity or volumetric flow meter that operates pursuant to Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction – which states that a voltage will be induced when a conductor moves through a magnetic field. Magmeters can detect the flow rate of conductive fluids only.

 

Electromagnetic Flow Meters, simply known as mag flow meter is a volumetric flow meter that is ideally used for wastewater applications and other applications that experience low-pressure drop and with appropriate liquid conductivity required. The device doesn’t have any moving parts and cannot work with hydrocarbons and distilled water. Mag flow meters are also easy to maintain. Magnetic flow meters work based on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. According to this principle, when a conductive medium passes through a magnetic field B, a voltage E is generated which is proportional to the velocity v of the medium, the density of the magnetic field, and the length of the conductor.
